About the ranking system

Why have the ranking system?

The Ranking system was devised in 2006 for two main reasons:

  1. To give an country-wide approach to slalom in Australia. Previously there had been a state by state approach to slalom and the ranking system was seen as something that could help improve this by giving inter-state races added value and importance.
  2. To help organisers create start-lists which accurately reflected a paddlers current ability. This hopefully leads to less paddlers being caught up or catching someone else up which can impact individual performances. This also has the result of giving younger or less experienced paddlers the time to watch the more experienced paddlers.

How is the ranking system calculated?

The Australian Canoe Slalom ranking system awards 100 points for the winner of a class in a ranking race and each paddler in the class will receive points proportional to their finishing position (for example a paddler finishing 10th in a 10 person class will receive 10 points, the person finishing 2nd in a 10 person class will receive 90 points).

This ranking list will be updated after each ranking race. Rankings are based on a paddlers's five best results during season and may include results gained from up to two state championships.

Ranking Champions in both Senior and Junior categories are announced at the end of each season.

Ranking races include:

  • State Championships
  • Pre-Australian Championships
  • Australian Championships
  • Senior Selection Races
This ranking list will form the basis of the start lists for the following season.

The ranking list includes all paddlers who:

  • Record a result at a race (if you capsize, do not finish a run, or do not start then your time is given as 9999.99).
  • Are an Australian resident.
